Pantai Pandawa Beach: One Of The Most Scenic Beaches In Bali

A golden sandy gem of Bali’s Bukit peninsula, Pantai Pandawa Beach is one of the longest beaches in Bali, stretching a whopping 800 meters along the Indian Ocean.

Best known to locals for its breathtaking views and impressive terrain, this beach is often overlooked by foreigners. And we are here to tell you that this beach in Bali is worth a visit, especially if you want to spend some time in the water.

What Makes Pandawa Beach So Popular?

Pandawa Beach is so popular among locals and tourists for a few reasons.

First, it is the road leading down to the beach: it goes through high ocean-facing limestone cliffs and feels different from most places in Bali.

Along the way, you will see six statues carved into the rock. These statues represent the five brothers from the Mahabharata (Hindu Epic) and Dewi Kunti, a mother figure from the epic. For that reason, many locals call this beach Pandawa Lima (Pandawa Five, in Indonesian).

Finally, water is usually calmer here than at many beaches around the Bukit Peninsula. This makes it more comfortable for swimming.

The sand is soft and light in colour, and the beach is wide, so there is plenty of space to relax even when more visitors arrive. Even on busier days, it usually does not feel too crowded.

Local seaweed farmers used to come here to collect seaweed but it is not that common anymore.

Where Is Pandawa Beach?

Pandawa Beach is located in Kutuh Village, Badung Regency, on the Bukit Peninsula in South Bali, right along the island’s southern coastline facing the Indian Ocean.

It is tucked between Nusa Dua (a well-known resort area) and Uluwatu (famous for its cliffs and surf spot). That is why, it’s easy to include in a day trip around the area. From here you get wide ocean views, and the surrounding limestone cliffs help block the strong wind, which is why the water is often calmer.

The area still feels quieter compared to Bali’s main tourist spots.

It is also close to the other famous and secret beaches like Melasti, Green Bowl Beach, Gunung Payung and Timbis, so you can easily visit a few in one day.

How To Get To  Pandawa Beach?

Reaching Pantai Pandawa is pretty straightforward, especially if you are already staying in South Bali. You will need to get to a roundabout on the main street (Jl Raya Nusa Dua Selatan) and follow Jalan Pantai Pandawa street all the way to the beach.

From the Airport, the drive usually takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the traffic. You will enjoy the smooth asphalt roads on your way!

If you are coming from Nusa Dua or Uluwatu, it is much closer and easier for a half-day or full-day tour. And you can easily rent a scooter or take a taxi.

From Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu, the drive is usually around 2-2.5 hours and from Ubud, around 3 hours due to heavy traffic so we highly recommend considering hiring a private driver and making a few stops along the way to make the timeline work.

Most people come by scooter or car using Google Maps. The roads are generally easy to follow and everyone knows where Pandawa Beach is. If you get lost, ask a local!

The final stretch takes you through the limestone cliffs before reaching the beach.

If you don’t drive or aren’t comfortable driving in Indonesia, hiring a private car or getting a taxi is the most convenient option.

Online taxi apps like Grab or Go-Jek can drop you off at the entrance but they may not be very reliable to get back, especially if you want to go all the way back to Canggu or Ubud.

Drivers don’t always enter the beach area, so you may need to walk back up towards the main gate or main street.

Note that there are two entrance gates to the beach:

  • The main entrance: the scenic route through Batu Barak Cliff (most people use)
  • entrance through Pandawa Hill Resort. By the resort, you can also find a little conservation/zoo setup with some animals (entrance is 20,000 IDR or 2 AUD).

Is There An Entrance Fee To  Pandawa Beach In Bali?

Yes, you will have to pay an entrance fee to access the beach. For international visitors, the fee for a bike and two people is 50,000 IDR (5 AUD) including parking.

If you are coming here by taxi, you won’t need to pay for this. They will drop you off by the scooter parking area.

Unlike many beaches in Bali, payments are accepted in cash and by card. If you have local digital wallets like GoPay and OVO, you can make a quick transfer.

What To Expect At Pandawa Beach?

Pandawa Beach offers more than some of the more popular neighbouring beaches and is absolutely a fun place to spend a few hours or a whole day if you are a true beach lover.

The beach is well equipped, there are paid toilets and free outdoor showers along the paved path. Plus, this is one of the few beaches in Bali equipped for wheelchair users.

Beautiful Road With Ocean-Facing Cliffs

The experience of visiting Pandawa actually begins before you even reach the sand.

The road goes directly through a tall limestone cliff, which creates an impressive entrance. Along the cliffs, you will see large stone statues of Pandawa characters from the Mahabharata story.

There are also some small spots along the road with clear views of the ocean and surrounding coastline, so you can enjoy the scenery before reaching the beach.

Swimming & Chilling

Water at Pantai Pandawa is usually calm, making it comfortable for swimming, especially near the shore. Plus, it is one of the least crowded beaches around South Kuta and Uluwatu, so you can truly relax.

Families with children often prefer this beach because, with the right weather conditions, it feels safer than stronger surf at nearby beaches.

However, as many beaches around the Southern coast, Pandawa beach still often experiences some of the strongest southern ocean currents so make sure to pay attention to red/yellow flags on the shore.

Some areas may have seaweed along the shore, which can feel a bit sticky underfoot but it rarely affects swimming. On a busy weekend, the beach can get crowded, so arriving early helps you find a good spot.

If Pandawa beach gets a bit crowded, head to the Timbis Beach or Batu Barak Beach next door. Your entry ticket is valid there, too.

Timbis is a secret beach in Bali with a bit higher pricing for daybeds and food, but absolutely stunning views, white sand, and blue ocean waters. It is even better for kids and swimming as the reef break protects the shore and you can enjoy gentle waves.

Pandawa Lighthouse

On the right side of Pandawa beach, you will find a small bright white lighthouse. It offers a great vantage point to enjoy the panoramic views, carved cliffs, and ocean breeze.

Not much else to do here, otherwise!

Sea Kayaking, Surfing & Water Activities

You will notice some small stands, renting kayaks, paddleboards, and sometimes snorkelling gear along the beach. Kayaking is a fun activity to explore the calm bay from the water.

Usually for these activities you need to pay around 50,000-100,000 IDR (5-10 AUD) for two people and you get life vests, a canoe, and paddles.

Always make sure to find a licensed provider near the entrance and double-check the weather! Make sure to ask where the safest spot is to enter the water: Pandawa beach has both sandy bottom and smooth rocks underwater, so you need to follow instructions from the locals!

Surfing also happens here (best for advanced surfers) and you can hire an instructor for about 300,000 IDR (30 AUD) for a 90-minute session.

A 15-minute flight comes with a GoPro video and costs about 1 mil IDR (100 AUD).

Sunbathing

Sunbeds and umbrellas are available to rent along the beach for around 50,000-100,000 IDR (5-10 AUD), depending on location and how long you stay.

The sun can get strong around midday, so renting an umbrella can make your visit more comfortable.

Some places also offer quick beach massages, perfect for relaxing while enjoying the view. The beach doesn’t get too crowded so you will likely find an empty sun lounger with no problem.

Local Warung & Beach Snacks

Several small warungs (simple local eateries or food stalls) sell drinks, fresh coconut water, fried rice, noodles and simple seafood dishes on the Western side of Pandawa Beach.
